PRIZES

Our judges will select 25 winners who will get an opportunity to be displayed on street banners along Washington Blvd in Mid City, pending City Council approval.

The street banners plan to hang for the next three years as public art.

MISSION

The Art Contest is about connecting with the community through art. Washington Blvd will transform into an outdoor gallery for everyone in the community to view. This is a wonderful opportunity for all types of artists to receive exposure and it connects us all through art.

SYNTHIA ST. JAMES

JACQUELINE ALEXANDER-SYKES

Jacqueline Alexander Sykes is a visual artist who today oversees St. Elmo Village. Jacqueline and Roderick have collaborated on dozens of public artworks and programs throughout Los Angeles. RODERICK SYKES

Roderick Sykes believed in the power of art as a means of social change. He helped co-found the St. Elmo Village, an art center in the mid-Wilshire area. GARY JONES

In 1967, Gary Jones began his professional life as a puppet artist in Chicago as the scenic designer of the world famous Kungsholm Miniature Grand Opera. In 1975, he founded his own company, The Blackstreet USA Puppet Theatre which presents “Gary Jones & The YUPPETS” (Young Urban Professional Puppets), which has been a presence on West Washington Boulevard for 30 years.
